Our San Antonio Road Trip & Top Texas Road Trip Stops

Mar 27, 2025

There’s something magical about a road trip. It’s not just about getting from point A to point B—it’s about the journey itself, the unexpected detours, and the memories you create along the way. My recent Spring Break adventure with my husband, Chad, and our two boys, Case & Carter, was a perfect example of this. We didn’t just rush to our destination (San Antonio), we made sure every mile was an adventure in itself.

Our San Antonio Road Trip
We set out with a plan: Get to San Antonio in the shortest time possible. Well, that didn’t exactly happen. The trip took us eight hours—not because of traffic, but because we made every stop we could along the way. After all, why rush when the journey can be just as fun as the destination?

First stop: Kolaches in West. It’s become a tradition for us, and if you’ve never had a true Texas kolache, you’re missing out! Sweet or savory, they’re the perfect road trip snack.

Next up: P. Terry’s in Austin. If you’ve never had one of their burgers, it’s time to make it a priority. I was a first-timer, and let me tell you—worth every bite.

Then: The world’s busiest Buc-ee’s in New Braunfels. You know you have to stop at Buc-ee’s, but navigating the chaos is another thing entirely. Still, we couldn’t leave without a selfie with Buc-ee and, of course, stocking up on Beaver Nuggets in bulk.

Final detour: Natural Bridge Caverns. It was a last-minute decision, but totally worth it. We climbed what felt like an 18-story building underground in the heat and humidity. My hair? Let’s just say it expanded to a new dimension. But the experience was amazing, and the views inside the caverns were worth every second.

Finally, we made it to San Antonio, where we kicked off the fun with a patio dinner on the Riverwalk, caught a St. Patrick’s Day parade, and ended the night with a river cruise and gelato spaghetti at Paciugo (yes, it’s as weird and delicious as it sounds).

Texas Road Trip Stops to Add to Your Itinerary
If you’re planning a road trip in Texas, here are a few more must-visit stops that’ll turn your journey into an adventure:

  1. Dripping Springs – Hamilton Pool Preserve
If you love nature, Hamilton Pool is a must-see. This natural spring-fed pool surrounded by a 50-foot waterfall is one of Texas’s most stunning hidden gems. It’s the perfect spot for a quick stop, swim, and nature walk.

  2. Fredericksburg – Enchanted Rock
Fredericksburg is already a charming little town, but if you’re up for a bit of adventure, hike to the top of Enchanted Rock. The panoramic views are worth the effort, and the area is great for a picnic or a relaxing afternoon.

  3. Luling – City Market BBQ
Luling’s City Market BBQ is a Texas legend. If you’re driving through the town, a stop here is a must. The brisket is melt-in-your-mouth delicious, and you’ll probably need to buy extra to take home.

  4. Waco – Magnolia Market
If you’re a fan of HGTV’s Fixer Upper, you won’t want to miss a stop at Chip and Joanna Gaines’ Magnolia Market. It’s a great place for shopping, grabbing a bite to eat, and soaking in the charming atmosphere of Waco.

  5. Amarillo – Cadillac Ranch
This quirky roadside attraction is perfect for a photo op and a little fun. Cadillac Ranch features ten colorful, half-buried Cadillacs that you can spray-paint (so bring a can of spray paint and let your creativity flow). It’s one of Texas’s most iconic road trip spots.

  6. San Angelo – Concho Avenue
For a taste of historic Texas, take a stroll down Concho Avenue in San Angelo. The town is full of history, and you can explore old West-style shops, charming cafes, and art galleries. Don’t forget to stop by the San Angelo State Park for some relaxation.

  7. New Braunfels – Gruene Hall
Located just outside of New Braunfels, Gruene Hall is one of Texas’s most historic music venues. Catching a live show here is a true Texas experience, with country music echoing in a building that dates back to 1878.

Final Thoughts
Road trips are all about the journey, the pit stops, and the experiences you gather along the way. Whether you’re heading to San Antonio or exploring other parts of Texas, be sure to slow down, make a few unexpected detours, and take the time to enjoy the moments. Who knows what you might discover along the way?

Happy road-tripping!
